For decades, many scientists and ordinary people have been puzzling over whether there is any other intelligent life in the Universe other than Earth life (if such life can be called intelligent).
One day the so-called Fermi paradox was formulated. Its essence is the following: if the Universe is full of stars and potentially viable planets, why have we not detected any signs of alien life or received messages from intelligent civilizations?
The recently emerged “dark forest” hypothesis offers a slightly different way of thinking. In particular, according to it, civilizations may be deliberately hiding from each other to prevent possible conflicts or resource depletion. In other words, each civilization is like a hunter who hides and camouflages itself by maintaining silence.
