Why do so many people get shorter as they age?

Most of these fractures don’t cause pain, so we often don’t notice them. However, as they accumulate and increase the compressive effect on the vertebrae, it can be difficult to maintain straight posture. This effect is often exacerbated by degeneration of the intervertebral discs as they begin to dry out and become less elastic.

The spine is made up of 23 discs, and even the loss of a few of them by a few millimeters can lead to a reduction in height.
