Scientists’ new theory: Indian tectonic plate is delaminating

However, a third option was presented at the American Geophysical Union conference: the Indian plate is “delaminating.” The upper part floats, while the lower part behaves similar to the way oceanic plates move beneath continental plates, such as in the area where South America meets the Pacific Ocean.

According to Prof. Dow van Hinsbergen of Utrecht University, such a version is new and quite fundamental for Earth science.
